A tour of Harrison County can be designed as a one day visit or as part of an integrated multi-county event.  U.S. Routes 22 and 250, State Routes 9, 342, 519,and 800, in addition to the routes  (parts of U.S.Route 250, State Routes 151, 646, and 799 and county road 2)  that form the Tappan-Moravian Trail Scenic Byway offer many options to enjoy the sights of the county.  Conveniently located "off the beaten path" an hour from Pittsburgh, and within a two hour range from Cleveland and Columbus, the area offers a wealth of opportunities for recreation, outdoor pursuits, and visiting sites of historical interest.

The following suggested tours have been timed for completion in 6 hours plus a one hour lunch.  If a tour begins at 9:00AM, it could be completed by 4:00PM to assure a timely return.  Each of the following suggestions are presented in segments that can be reversed depending on originating route or final destination.

                           Heritage Tour
F
ollows U.S. Route 250 in Cadiz and State Route 9 to New Athens  -  This tour showcases the sites in Harrison County that depict our cultural and economic origins.

 Cadiz Village Segment:
  

  • guided tours of the1890s Courthouse and the Harrison County Historical Society followed by tours of the Clark Gable Birth Home & Gift Shop, and the History of Coal Museum.

Agricultural/Abolitionist Segment:
             

  • This segment can include a visit to the Boss Bison Ranch outside of Cadiz for a unique agricultural experience and/or a tour of the Franklin Museum in New Athens showcasing origins of the abolitionist movement prior to the Civil War.

  • Catered meal at Wallace Lodge at Sally Buffalo Park in Cadiz (handicapped accessible, bus parking)

                Moravian Trail Tour
Follows the Tappan-Moravian Trail Scenic Byway (County Road 2, U. S. Route 250, State Routes 151 & 646). 

Deersville/Ourant School Segment:
 

  • Walking tour of the Village of Deersville which was a booming area during the stagecoach era in the late 1800s and is being restored to highlight that period.  Enjoy a homemade ice cream cone at the General Store that has been in continued operation for over 100 years.
  • Visit a completely restored 19th Century one room school house complete with primitive restrooms and presented by Ourant School Foundation Members in period clothing.

Scio/New Rumley Segment:
 

  • The Village of Scio was a booming town in the turn of the 20th century with an oil boom and an active college.  The oil boom was followed by a lengthy pottery manufacturing period .  The Scio Museum provides a great view of the times.
  • New Rumley, Ohio is the birthplace of General George A. Custer and the town center is dedicated to the preservation of his memory.

Meal options:

  • Picnic/box lunch or Family Style catered meals served at Ourant School
  • Civic Group catered meal served at the Community Hall in Deersville
  • Preset menu meal at Tappan Marina overlooking the lake
  • Preset meal at Hugo's Restaurant in Scio
  • Prearranged meal served at New Rumley Church

                     Civil War Tour

This tour visits the sites that depict the pivotal role many Harrison County citizens played in the war between the states.  To be finished in one day, the Cadiz Segment needs to be in the middle and can be reversed depending upon originating or final route.

New Rumley Segment:      

  • Custer Memorial Park
  • Custer Museum

 Cadiz Village Segment:

  • Simultaneous guided tours of the1890s Courthouse and Lawn, and the displays of the Harrison County Historical Society at the Bullock House, former home of General Thomas Vincent.
  • Guided segment at Union Cemetery
  • Guided tour of Dickerson Church and Cemetery

Abolitionist Segment:              

  • Tour of the Franklin Museum in New Athens showcasing origins of the abolitionist movement prior to the Civil War.   Look for the above marker.

This option incorporates the Deersville/ Ourant School segment of the Moravian Trail Tour with a side segment off the trail.

Deersville/Ourant School Segment:

This segment could precede the Cadiz Village Segment of the Heritage Tour or the Scio/New Rumley Segment of the Moravian Trail Tour.
